On 15 December 2023, a historic partnership was sealed between St Petersburg Mining University and nine African countries, marking the start of an innovative collaboration in the field of specialist training in the mining industry.

The agreement, signed under the aegis of UNESCO’s International Centre of Competence in Mining Education, establishes an educational consortium aimed at training leading specialists in the mining sector. Angola, Ghana, Egypt, Mali, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe have joined forces with St Petersburg Mining University to create a professional community of higher education institutions.

This groundbreaking agreement is designed to promote the exchange of knowledge and educational development between Russia and Africa. It also provides for the setting up of two offices of the Russian-African educational consortium, one at Saint Petersburg Mining University and the other in Africa, thus encouraging the presence of African students and the participation of the institution’s professors in specialised training programmes in Africa.

Vladimir Litvinenko, Rector of St Petersburg Mining University and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the International Centre of Competence in Mining Education, emphasised the positive impact of this collaboration. « The creation of such a professional community will have a significant impact on joint scientific programmes and open up new opportunities for students and professors », said the Rector.

In recognition of this outstanding commitment to the training of African engineers, the Trophée Africanity Trophy Foundation awarded the African Peace Trophy to Rector Vladimir Litvinenko. Founded in 1773, the Saint Petersburg Mining University, under the leadership of Empress Catherine II, continues to make its mark on history through its innovative initiatives and its commitment to global educational development.

This honorary award underlines the importance of international cooperation in the field of education and pays tribute to Rector Litvinenko’s commitment to advancing knowledge and skills in the mining sector in Africa.
